Binns Department Store began in Sunderland in 1807, founded by George Binns as a drapery business. Over generations, it grew into a major retail presence in the North of England and Scotland. By the early 20th century, Binns had expanded to cities like Newcastle, Middlesbrough, and Edinburgh, becoming known for its quality goods and the slogan “Shop at Binns.”
The Sunderland flagship store was iconic, spanning both sides of Fawcett Street and featuring an underground walkway. After suffering damage in World War II, it was rebuilt and continued to thrive until its acquisition by House of Fraser in 1953. Despite remaining a beloved name for decades, the store eventually closed in 1993, marking the end of an era in regional retail history.
