Restored reproduction of an original advert included in the 1950 edition of the "Port of Sunderland" Official Handbook issued jointly by the River Wear Commissioners and the Sunderland Corporation. The book was printed and published by Thomas Reed & Company Limited of High Street West in Sunderland.
Founded in 1837 by George Bartram, the yard launched its first ship, Crown, in 1838 at Hylton. By the 1870s, it moved to South Dock, building iron-hulled vessels and later steamships.
Renamed Bartram & Sons in 1889, the company thrived through both World Wars, producing cargo ships, tramp steamers, and naval vessels. It was known for quality and craftsmanship, employing hundreds and exporting ships globally.
In 1968, it was taken over by Austin & Pickersgill, nationalised in 1977, and closed in 1978, ending over 140 years of shipbuilding excellence on the River Wear.
Printed on high quality 230gsm matt archival paper.
