Founded around 1880, Tyne Dock Engineering Co. Ltd. began as a ship repair and marine engineering firm near Tyne Dock, South Shields. By 1889, it was formally registered and expanded to multiple dock sites including Market Dock, Craster’s Dock, and later Middle Dock. 

TDE became known for ship repairs, drydocking, and marine engineering, serving both commercial and naval vessels. In the 1980s–90s, it acquired several yards and rebranded them as TDE East, West, and Hill Street.

In 1998, Cammell Laird acquired the Hill Street site, renaming it Cammell Laird South Shields, which closed in 1999, ending over a century of ship repair heritage on the Tyne.
